Mesh basket system provides space solution on Canary Wharf site

Canary Wharf Contractors enlisted the help of TCi furniture WORKS to accommodate 2000 operatives in a unique environment.

The objective was to provide a suitable changing room/locker room facility for up to 2000no operatives on site at peak, with a focus on security and maintaining a clean environment.

As with any activity on London sites, space was at a premium and in this case, the main area available for site welfare and office areas was part of an unused basement car park, due later to be demolished as part of the project. This created its own challenge in terms of the effective use of space. Unlike the vast majority of large welfare set-ups which generally occupy standard modular buildings with consistent dimensions, the layout featured angles, curves, pillars, ramps and the floor to ceiling heights ranged from 1600mm to 2400mm. This is not ideal for standard locker heights of 1780mm, let alone the efficient placement of lockers and benches within the awkwardly shaped spaces.

TCi presented an answer to these problems using CAD space planning to offer a wire-mesh hanging basket system with standard changing benches. This provided:

  • Numbered security
  • Flexible layout options
  • Cleaner, clearer changing areas
  • No padlocked lockers with no keys
  • Operation by attendant to increase security

A made-to-order frame height and adjustments to the legs was made to suit the ceiling height and uneven flooring – particularly where installed on ramps.

By using the space saving design (Standard Double Frame = 3000mm x 100mm (40no Baskets) Compared to : 3000mm x 1000mm ( 27no Standard Lockers)) TCi was able to accommodate the required 2000no operatives within the spaces provided where lockers would simply not have been viable.

The system also provides remarkable flexibility for social distancing measures read more HERE

In addition to the changing facility TCi also supplied and installed canteen furniture to accommodate sittings of 640 operatives and 170 workstations and seating for project offices.
